A late comeback came up short for the Licking County Settlers (18-17) as they fell to the Grand Lake Mariners (16-17) by a score of 12-11 in 10 innings on a rainy Sunday night. The Settlers scored seven runs in the eighth and ninth innings to push the game to extras before a two-out single by Grand Lake’s Alec Turner plated what would be the winning run.
Licking County found themselves down four runs entering in the bottom of the ninth, and were able to string a couple of timely hits together for some extra baseball. The Settlers had an opportunity to win it in the ninth with the bases loaded and just one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the opportunity.
Licking County was looking to make yet another comeback in the 10th inning, after Kevin Hickey reached on an error, but an obstruction was called on Hickey with Grand Lake attempting to turn a double play. That exchange ended the game.
All-Stars Woody Wallace (University of Cincinnati) and Tanner Johnson (Denison University) each displayed their talent with a combined five hits, three runs, and four RBIs, a night that both will look to continue moving into the final stretch of the season.
The Settlers will be off until Thursday, July 23 for the All-Star Break, but seven players will be in action on Tuesday night in Mason, OH during the All-Star Game.
